The ECT Department held an open lecture for schoolchildren dedicated to the mysteries of modern cosmology

On April 29, an exciting popular science lecture organized by the ECT Department took place. The event was attended by 9th-11th grade students from School No. 2 who are interested in astronomy and cosmology, the mysteries of space, and cutting-edge science.

The lecturer was Professor of the ECT Department Anatoliy Opanasyuk. The topic of the open lecture was: “The James Webb Space Telescope: The collapse of our ideas about the formation of the Universe?”.

The launch of this most powerful instrument for space exploration in human history has already brought numerous sensational images and data that are forcing scientists worldwide to revise astronomy textbooks. During the hour-long lecture, the speaker explained complex physical processes in accessible language and guided the audience through the most interesting questions of modern cosmology
.

In particular, Anatoliy Opanasyuk focused in detail on the following topics:
  • Foundations of modern cosmology: how humanity studies the large-scale structure and evolution of the Universe.
  • Models of the Universe: from classical theories to the most modern hypotheses emerging thanks to new data from the James Webb telescope..
  • Phase transitions in the expanding Universe: how the state of matter has changed from the time of the Big Bang to the present day.

The schoolchildren had a wonderful opportunity to learn how “big science” works right now, why old theories might face “collapse” under the pressure of new facts, and to ask their questions.

The ECT Department thanks all participants for their interest in science! We are always open to talented youth and look forward to seeing you at our next events. Follow the announcements on our website!
