The Department of Electronics and Computer Technology (EСT) was established on January 3, 1971, as the Department of General Physics and Electrical Engineering of the Sumy Branch of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute (KPI). In the following year, through the separation from the Department of General Scientific Disciplines by order No. 1939-I dated September 8, 1972, it was renamed to the Department of General Electrical Engineering (GEE). At that time, the head of the GEE department was Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. Volodymyr Mykolayovych Briukhanov. From September 1, 1979, in connection with his retirement, Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. Oleksandr Anatoliyovych Shmuratov was appointed as the head of the department.

In September 1980, based on the Department of General Electrical Engineering (GEE), evening classes were launched for students in the specialization of “Electrical Drive and Industrial Automation,” and a year later for “Industrial Electronics” and “Automation and Complex Mechanization of Mechanical Engineering.” This marked the beginning of the development of the institution’s educational and scientific activities in the field of physics and technology. Starting from December 24, 1982, the head of the GEE department was appointed as D.Sc., Prof. Hryhorii Semenovych Volodchenko, who remained in this position until 1992. |
In 1985, the department began training students in the full-time program in the field of “Industrial Electronics” (enrolling 53 students). The first graduating class in the specialization of “Industrial Electronics” for the evening division took place in 1986.
In 1987, a section was established within the Department of General Electrical Engineering (GEE) that initiated the training of students in the new specialization of “Robotic Systems and Complexes” (enrolling 50 students). In 1988, student recruitment was also conducted for two additional specializations: “High Voltage Equipment and Electrophysics” (44 students) and “Electronic Engineering” (50 students).
On March 17, 1989, by order No. 441-II, the Department of General Electrical Engineering (GEE) was renamed to the Department of “High Voltage Electrophysics and Electrical Engineering” (HVEEE). Almost simultaneously, by order No. 432-I dated February 7, 1989, a new department, “Automation and Industrial Electronics” (AIE), was established through the separation from the Department of General Electrical Engineering.
Another significant event in the development of the educational institution was the establishment of the Sumy Physical-Technological Institute (SFTI) based on the Sumy Branch of Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute (SFTI) (Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR No. 299 dated October 8, 1990).

In 1991, the Department of Automation and Industrial Electronics (AIE) was renamed to the Department of “Industrial Electronics” (IE) (Order No. 5-I dated January 21, 1991), and from May 15, 1992, the head of this department became D.Sc., Professor Oleksii Andriyovych Borisenko. He led the department for 20 years. |
By the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Resolution No. 646 dated August 13, 1993, Sumy State University (SumDU) was established based on Sumy Physical-Technological Institute (SFTI).
In 1998, the Department of Industrial Electronics at Sumy State University (SumDU) began training students in the specialization of “Electronic Systems.” Another renaming of the department took place in 2003 when the Department of Industrial Electronics was renamed to the Department of “Electronics and Computer Technology” (ECT) (Order No. 345-I dated October 22, 2003).
Today, the ECT department educates specialists in the field of “Electronic Systems” in the full-time program with an emphasis on information and control devices, systems, and complexes. The main research directions of the department’s staff include fault-tolerant electronic control systems and electronic components, information systems for compression and information transmission with protection against interference and unauthorized access, the development of optoelectronic, sensory, and detector devices, and photovoltaic devices based on new semiconductor materials, among others.

Since September 2, 2012, the head of the Department of Electronics and Computer Technology (ECT) has been Dr. Sc. in Physics and Mathematics, Anatolii Sergiyovych Opanasiuk. |
At the department, postgraduates are studying in the fields of specialization 122 “Computer Science,” 104 “Physics and Astronomy,” and 105 “Applied Physics and Nanomaterials.”
Under the supervision of Borisenko O.A., 10 doctoral dissertations have been defended, and under the guidance of Opanasiuk A.S., 7 doctoral dissertations have been defended. In recent years, the Department of Electronic and Computer Technologies (ECT) has published 8 educational textbooks (4 of which have been approved by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine), and 4 monographs. In just 2021, ECT department staff members have published 120 publications, including 37 articles, some of which were printed in high-impact journals.”
